"A GLEAM OF GRATITUDE"

The Thanksgiving season is one of great joy and gratitude to God, divine Love, for His goodness and bounty. At this time it is only natural and right for one to be grateful for his own well-being and that of his loved ones and his nation. But in Christian Science, gratitude takes on a new meaning. The student of this Science knows that his well-being is the result of an enlarged understanding of God. This is the real cause for rejoicing and thanksgiving, and this gratitude is not limited to one particular season or even to one day of the year.

The Christian Scientist is profoundly grateful for the inspired teachings of his religion and for his ability to prove to a satisfying degree many of its holy precepts. Such genuine gratitude, pure and warmly sincere, marks every moment of his daily progress. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 1), "To kindle all minds with a gleam of gratitude, the new idea that comes welling up from infinite Truth needs to be understood."

Our Leader knew that an understanding of Christian Science would inevitably result in a deeper sense of reverence and gratitude for all that the discovery proclaims concerning God—the all-powerful, the all-loving— and concerning man, made in His image and likeness. With some knowledge of God and His laws as revealed in Science, one soon perceives that spiritual understanding and gratitude are inseparable companions.
