Teaching the Simpler Meanings

[From a teacher in a branch church Sunday School]

How are the simpler meanings of the divine Principle taught in the Christian Science Sunday School?

I had never given much thought to this question until appointed to teach the two-and-a-half- to five-year-olds in our Sunday School. The first few Sundays were difficult, and I began to wonder if I was in my right place. I believed I had one of the necessary requisites, a great love for children, but I felt I needed to get a better understanding of them in the light of the definition of "children" given in the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 582). I studied this passage and the one on page 62 of the same book, which reads, "The entire education of children should be such as to form habits of obedience to the moral and spiritual law, with which the child can meet and master the belief in so-called physical laws, a belief which breeds disease."

Through the realization that both children and teacher reflect the same unlimited intelligence, and through reliance on God for inspiration and guidance, I soon found joy in the work. I was able to present in an interesting way the lessons which Mrs. Eddy designates in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. XX, Sect. 3) as the "first lessons."
