One evening our baby daughter...

One evening our baby daughter fell and badly injured her arm. It appeared to be broken. When it became evident that my understanding of Christian Science was not sufficient to overcome the child's pain, I called a practitioner. In a few minutes the child went to sleep, and I placed her in her crib without undressing her. She slept peacefully all night, and the next morning she was her usual self, except that she screamed when I touched her arm, which still hung limp and useless. I prayed constantly as I went about my household tasks.

Toward noon I became conscious of a single word repeating itself over and over in my mind. The word was "guillotined." I could not remember ever having seen that word in any of Mrs. Eddy's writings, and at that time I did not have a Concordance. But I knew that if the word pointed to a healing thought, God could show me where to find it. And so He did. I opened the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the first words I saw were (p. 427), "Man is the same after as before a bone is broken or the body guillotined."

I did not fully understand the spiritual meaning of those words, but I did realize that I should try to think of our daughter as God's child and therefore just as perfect now as on the previous day, before the accident had occurred. I made a sincere effort to do so.
