I am so glad to be able to express...
I am so glad to be able to express in a testimony in our periodicals my gratitude for healings I have received in Christian Science. My first healing in this beautiful religion came several years ago. Two periods of hospitalization, a major operation, and much medical care had failed to bring me health. I became extremely despondent and fearful of dying.
An ailment which my physician tentatively diagnosed as an intestinal ulcer failed to respond to any medical treatment. This kindly doctor finally prescribed for me a drug which he said had been newly discovered and which was supposed to provide relief in such cases, but he said that in the event I did not receive immediate aid from this dosage, I must go to the hospital for exploratory X rays. I failed to receive the slightest relief, and seeing no prospect before me but another period in the hospital and eventual surgery, I became deeply despairing. Some years before, at a time of great sorrow for me, a sister had asked me to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had done so, and while I received a measure of comfort from my reading, I did not acquire much understanding, and in time I completely drifted away from the thought presented. This same dear sister now presented the textbook to me again and asked me to read it. This time when I read it, it was like a new book. What before had seemed unintelligible to me was now beautifully clear and logical.
Help was asked of a Christian Science practitioner who lived at a distance, and absent treatment was given. I shall never forget the great peace and joy that came to me during this experience. Upon receiving a letter from the practitioner, I found that selections she had sent me to study from the textbook were selections I had already heavily underlined and was studying before I received her letter. The new birth had truly begun. The painful attacks continued for a short time, gradually becoming milder and farther apart, and finally they ceased completely. All during this time I never doubted that I would be healed. This healing was complete, and the condition has never recurred.
