WATCHING OUR THOUGHTS

The loving counsel which Christ Jesus gave to his disciples (Mark 13:37), "What I say unto you I say unto all. Watch," has been commended to us by the beloved Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. In fact, she must have felt deeply the need for our compliance with this command of the Master, for in the sixth tenet of The Mother Church she states that Christian Scientists promise to watch their thoughts (see Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 497). How to maintain a watch or guard over our thinking is made clear in her writings.

The Mind which was in Christ Jesus is the only real Mind. It is the one and only intelligence, known as God, which is conscious only of its own wholly good and pure existence. In order to follow obediently in the steps of our great Way-shower we must daily demonstrate our oneness, or unity, with this omnipresent Mind. If we are to love as Jesus loved, it is needful to watch that harsh criticism and complaining do not employ our thoughts.

Our work is to know and to affirm constantly that man is the image and likeness of God. As Mind's reflection, man embodies only that which is good, harmonious, and lovely. This perfect and completely spiritual man, who knows only what God, his perfect Principle, knows, can never be aware of anything to complain about. As we understand this and dwell in the consciousness of infinite good, joyously acknowledging and accepting the beautiful, harmonious, and healthful ideas emanating from Mind, we can know no cause for complaint.
