I first learned of the great healing truth, Christian Science, about ten years ago. I had been serving in the Army, and at the close of the Second World War, I was brought from overseas in a bad physical condition. My case had been diagnosed as battle fatigue and nervous prostration. There was also a large shrapnel wound in my forehead. Later the doctors told me that they had held little hope for my recovery.

All my life I had prayed to God and many times felt that He was very near to me, though I did not understand just who or what God is. One afternoon I thought I was very close to passing on, and I was praying as I had never prayed before, when a Christian Science Wartime Minister came into my room. He told me who he was and what he did. I poured out my troubles to him, and I shall never forget the tenderness with which he spoke the following words: "This is not true about you. God loves you, and God is Love."

Those were beautiful words to me, although I had never heard God explained in this way. The Wartime Minister gave me some literature to read and said he would see me again. As soon as he left I began reading a Sentinel which he had given me. I read it from cover to cover and became so absorbed that I was not aware of anything going on around me. I must have read for at least two hours. Then I decided to get up, although I had not been out of bed for a long time. There was a public telephone in the hall; so I called the Wartime Minister. I told him that something wonderful had happened which I did not understand, and I asked him to pray for me. "Yes," he replied, "something wonderful has happened, and I shall take up work for you at once."
