THE DEMAND FOR PROGRESS

After the children of Israel had suffered grievous enslavement and persecution in Egypt, Moses led them into the wilderness toward the promised land of freedom. Then the king of Egypt followed them with a large army of horses and chariots. The Israelites became frightened and turned on Moses, complaining bitterly because he had persuaded them to leave the land of slavery. They insisted that it would have been better for them had they remained in Egypt rather than die in the wilderness. To Moses came the message from God (Ex. 14:15), "Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward."

This command to lead the people out of slavery came also to our Leader. Mary Baker Eddy, when she discovered the great healing and liberating power of Christian Science. She tells us on page 226 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," that she pressed on, with confidence in Truth's power to lead her into the promised land —the land of Christian Science— where the individual finds himself free from the false claims of the material senses.

Today the Christ, through Christian Science, calls to mankind to come out from the land of Egypt, from the slavery of the false beliefs imposed by the material senses, and to keep going forward in the demonstration of Truth. Our Leader writes (ibid., p. 233): "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them."
