"TREASURES OF TRUTH AND LOVE"

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit" (Gal. 5:25). What can these challenging words of St. Paul's mean to us today? Paul, who learned a great lesson of humility, emphasizes over and over again that the moral and spiritual qualities are needed before we can understand God. He taught that "if we live in the Spirit" we must, step by step, keep our lives in line with our highest ideal.

In Christian Science, which is based on the Bible, we learn that the real man of God's creating lives in Spirit, for God is Spirit and God is everywhere. But we also learn that it is not enough just to make absolute statements without understanding them or without living in accordance with the teachings of the Bible. The Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, constantly point out the need for expressing the qualities which Paul listed as "the fruit of the Spirit" (Gal. 5:22, 23): "Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance."

Since God is Spirit, man's existence must be spiritual, but how does Christian Science teach that spiritual existence can be understood and be seen as a practical possibility? Mrs. Eddy tells us clearly in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 265), "Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged." What are these "treasures of Truth and Love" which must be enlarged in our lives? A study, in the Bible and in Mrs. Eddy's writings, of such words as treasures, jewels, and so on will reveal that these treasures include such qualities as those already referred to.
