HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYMENT

Man acts by divine authority. He is not a personal author, for there is but one creator, God. As God's idea, man reflects eternally the perfect and harmonious activity of God, Mind, his divine Principle. Christ Jesus made this fact clear when he said (John 5:19), "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."

Being a spiritual idea, man's work is spiritual. It is to glorify God through the manifestation of His qualities. Therefore the key to happy and successful employment is to express and utilize divine qualities. Which of two individuals, one expressing intelligence, honesty, and co-operation, the other manifesting incompetence, dishonesty, and selfishness, will have a happy and successful employment? The answer is self-evident. As one entertains and utilizes only right ideas, one demonstrates that he is in reality the expression of Mind. The result is congenial and prosperous employment, legitimate and natural.

Happy and successful employment is not found in matter, for the divine qualities which constitute man's work do not originate from, reside in, or pass through matter. Christian Science shows that there is no intelligence, life, or love in matter. Actually there is no matter to work in or with, for Mind, Spirit, is All-in-all. What appears as a material position in an office, factory, or field, where matter seems to be used, transformed, and individualized in things, is but the externalization of thoughts entertained, unfolded, associated, and utilized. Our employment has the quality of our thoughts. Mary Baker Eddy reveals this sequence as law in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" where she writes (p. 261), "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." Because harmony, or the kingdom of heaven, is within us, the conditions for harmonious employment are always at hand.
