A Pupil's Footsteps

[An address given by a Sunday School teacher in a branch church meeting]

Many times it has occurred to me that among the numerous blessings that have been bestowed upon me by my Father-Mother God are two for which I shall never cease to be grateful: first, the privilege of attending the Christian Science Sunday School from the age of four; second, the privilege of now serving as a teacher in the very same Sunday School.

Looking back on my wonderful Sunday School experience, which truly cannot be adequately measured by months or years or any finite measurement, I find that I can best visualize my gain in terms of steps. How important are the first steps of a little child. Important indeed are these steps which all of us have taken, because it is thus that we learned to walk. And how important are the first spiritual footsteps in Christian Science by which we learn to walk in the way of the Christ, Truth.

My first spiritual footsteps were taken in this Sunday School. Here I early learned that God is Love, ever present, all-powerful, and that I am His spiritual image and likeness, forever perfect. Here it was learned that God is my Father-Mother and that heaven is all around me—not a distant place, but close within, a happy and harmonious state of thought. It was learned that error is actually nothing, although we sometimes make it seem real by letting it enter the door of our thinking. Here I learned to conquer error in its various phases, whether physical or otherwise, with the two-edged sword of Truth.
