"THEN WILL YOU HEAL"

Who is there among Christian men and women who has not at some time expressed the desire to heal as Jesus healed, to help solve through spiritual understanding the many problems confronting our neighbor, our country, and our world?

That we may find the way to fulfill this desire let us consider a sentence in a letter written by Mary Baker Eddy to a branch church. It reads (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 151): "May mercy and truth go before you: may the lamp of your life continually be full of oil, and you be wedded to the spiritual idea, Christ; then will you heal, and teach, and preach, on the ascending scale of everlasting Life and Love." The qualifications found here are surely not too difficult to understand.

In the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy gives us this definition of "oil" (p.592): "Consecration; charity; gentleness; prayer; heavenly inspiration." Christ Jesus' life perfectly expressed these qualities. Peter says that Jesus "went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him" (Acts 10:38). "God was with him" in the Godlike qualities he expressed. His consecration, his love and gentleness, his prayers of affirmation of man's oneness with God, his heavenly inspiration—all operated to bless and heal mankind.
