THE RHYTHM OF THE UNIVERSE

Rhythm in its true sense is a property of Mind, of Life, inherent in God's nature. It is therefore a spiritual attribute. In Mind's spiritual universe each identity, from the least to the greatest, is held in, governed by, and obedient to Mind's rhythmic law of unfoldment and progress. Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of God as immortal Mind, says (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 82, 83), "This Mind, then, is not subject to growth, change, or diminution, but is the divine intelligence, or Principle, of all real being; holding man forever in the rhythmic round of unfolding bliss, as a living witness to and perpetual idea of inexhaustible good."

Why is it that mankind are not more fully conscious of this "rhythmic round of unfolding bliss," but are instead often weighed down by weariness and care, sin, sickness, and sorrow? Is it not because mortals are out of step with the rhythm of the one Mind and believe themselves to be revolving in orbits of their own?

All dancers know the sense of lightness and exhilaration which comes from keeping perfect time with the music, and also the feeling of heaviness and lack of harmony which results if one gets out of step. Likewise self-will, personal responsibility, and human outlining of one's daily affairs tend to result in confusion, heaviness, and fatigue. This is because these errors oppose and obstruct God's perfect plan for man, which is always a rhythmic unfoldment of good.
