AN INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE MISSION

Only once in the history of the human race has the unqualified statement been made and verified (John 16:33), "Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

The full significance of this momentous assertion is not comprehended until we realize that it was made not in the glory of the resurrection morn, but on the eve of the crucifixion. Jesus knew that in a few hours he would be arrested, forsaken, mocked, scourged, and crucified. He knew that Judas was already on his way to betray him to the chief priests. Yet our beloved Master did not falter.

When, a little later, he stood before Pilate in the judgment hall, Jesus' accusers did not see him as a world conqueror, but rather as a defeated man whose mission had been a complete failure. Even his devoted followers had forsaken him. With ineffable love and sublime self-abnegation, he submitted to the cruelty of his foes; patiently he endured their taunts and accusations; silently he went to Calvary, where he allowed men to crucify and entomb his body.
