There was a time in my life when...

There was a time in my life when I thought that there was no God: I was alone, and I had no money and hardly any food. As I could not find work, I finally accepted charity.

Later an opportunity came for me to do housework on a large ranch. This work I accepted, but the suggestion came: "Why should you do such work as this? You are foolish." The desire for a life of case kept presenting itself to me very strongly, and sometimes the thought came that the only way out of my troubles was self-destruction. The fact that I had a child to support, however, kept me from such an act.

One day during all this confusion in my life a member of a Christian Science literature distribution committee gave mo a Sentinel. I took it home and put it on the dresser. Later, when the thought of self-destruction came to me. I picked up this Sentinel, and when I opened it, my eyes fell upon the words of a poem, which I accepted as the still small voice of divine guidance. Immediately I turned to God, praying to know the way that led to Him. Then I called on a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly gave me help. How grateful I am for having called on that practitioner! Gradually my thoughts wore turned from despair to peace and happiness. On my third visit to the practitioner, the beautiful light of Truth, which dispels all darkness, became clear to me. At once I was free, recognizing my true selfhood as a child of God. There came a great spiritual uplift with this demonstration of Truth. I had ten dollars in my purse, and although it was all the money I had, I gave it all to the practitioner. I know then and there that I had what I most needed.
