While I was adjusting a window...

While I was adjusting a window in our cellar, the chair I was standing on suddenly tipped over. I fell backward and struck the concrete floor with my head. At once I declared (Ps. 46:1), "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Then I started singing one of my favorite hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal. All discomfort from the accident vanished at once, and I continued my work.

I have always found it helpful to sing in times of difficulty. To me, one of the loveliest features of our services in Churches of Christ, Scientist, is the singing of inspirational hymns. They are a real treatment and bring courage, patience, and implicit faith in the power of Almighty God. Christian Science is a religion of joy. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes (p.14), "Sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love."

For forty years I was addicted to the smoking habit. Also I occasionally indulged in alcoholic beverages at social gatherings. Thanks to Christian Science I no longer use liquor or tobacco in any form. As a result of this healing, I enjoy the best of health and have the great satisfaction which follows the conquering of false habits.
