STEADFASTNESS

Our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, is an inspiring example of steadfastness. He never wavered in his conviction that through God, Spirit, he and those who believed his teachings and followed them faithfully could help and heal themselves and others. His firm adherence to this conviction brought him through the experience of the crucifixion and to the resurrection, by which he demonstrated eternal Life; then to the ascension, which proved the nothingness of matter.

Mary Baker Eddy, whose spiritual understanding sustained her through trials which might have defeated one less resolute, has given us in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," an elucidation of Jesus' teachings and a method of applying them which, through spiritual reasoning and revelation, enables us to liberate ourselves from the claims of the senses. She says on page 495: "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought."

If the sincere effort to give full attention to God and His goodness occupies us to the exclusion of all error, there is, even momentarily, neither time to contemplate evil nor room in our thoughts for doubts and misgivings. A continuous state of well-being is the fruit of a continuous state of such spiritual thinking.
