TREASURES

[Of Special Interest to Children]

A Treasure is something precious or a collection of precious things. Little girls may have collections of dolls, doll clothes, doll furniture. Little boys often collect toy cars, marbles, postage stamps. They like to keep their treasures in a safe place, such as a box or trunk. Some of these have locks to keep their contents safe. On dark or rainy days, when they must play indoors, they get out their treasures and have fun sharing them with their friends.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered and founded Christian Science, tells us of other treasures—treasures of Truth and Love, These are truths we learn concerning God. For instance, we learn that God is Love and that He is everywhere. Wherever we go, God is there. We learn that we are His children and that He cares for us always. God is Mind, and all of our thought treasures come from Him. God is Spirit. His children reflect Him, and they are always healthy, happy, and good.

The more we learn of God, the better we shall understand and prove what we really are. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 265), "Man understands spiritual existence in proportion as his treasures of Truth and Love are enlarged."

Treasures of Truth and Love cannot be stored in a box or trunk, but we can always keep them in our thinking. We can use these treasures as much as we want to and they will never wear out because they are God's gifts to us. They cannot be lost either, or stolen, or destroyed.

When we are tempted to be sick, afraid, disobedient, or angry we believe that error is trying to break into our thought to rob us of our treasures of Truth and Love. If we "stand porter at the door of thought,' as Mrs. Eddy tells us to do (ibid., p. 392), we shall keep the door of our thinking closed to error, securely fastened by the strong lock of obedience to God. Then we shall know that God is the only Mind. And because we reflect that Mind, we know that only good is real.

The Bible tells us of David, the shepherd boy, who was happy with his thoughts of Truth and Love and used them well. Perhaps lie sang these words as he watched his father's sheep in the fields (Ps. 139:17, 18): "How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand." The precious thought of God's nearness gave David courage to destroy a lion and a bear that attacked his flock. Later, armed with the truth that God, good, is the only power, David overcame the giant Goliath and saved the army of his king.

It is fun to share our toys with others. It makes us even happier to share with them our precious thoughts. If anyone seems troubled about something, we can help him by knowing that God loves him. We can also know that God's love surrounds our pets, too.

Another David, a little boy of three, hurt his hand when someone accidentally shut the car door on it. At once his mother took him in her arms and spoke to him of God. She reminded him of God's love, a love so strong that no harm can ever come to one of His little ones. Soon he stopped crying and began to talk about the Christian Science Sunday School and what he had learned there. He and his mother happily shared with each other their treasures of Truth and Love.

An hour or so later, as they were washing their hands before supper, David's hand showed no bruise or mark of any kind. He and his mother had used their thought treasures and had brought about a perfect healing!

Let us remember to thank God each day for giving Christian Science to Mrs. Eddy. And let us always be grateful that she, in turn, gave it to us. For Christian Science teaches us how to find and keep the treasures of Truth and Love.
