TOOLS OF THE CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST

The basic tools of an active Christian Scientist are the King James Version of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as well as her other writings. These tools will never be replaced, because they were divinely inspired. The Bible and Science and Health yield practical inspiration when they are studied each day in connection with the Lesson-Sermons provided in the Christian Science Quarterly. And the monthly, weekly, and daily publications,The Christian Science Journal, the Sentinel, and The Christian Science Monitor, are supplementary tools which make our other tools more valued and more effective.

These basic tools need no sharpening or polishing, but Christian Scientists are privileged by provision of the Founder of the Christian Science movement, Mrs. Eddy, to have instruction in the use of their tools. Class instruction and yearly association meetings increase the students' skill with their tools, since it is always the purpose of the teacher to turn thought toward the books and not toward the teacher.

The teacher, designated by prayerful demonstration, can certainly furnish the loving and practical impetus which helps us in the use of our tools. To devote time and thought constantly to reading miscellaneous papers on the subject of Christian Science or to try to get many varied human opinions about it would be comparable to a man with a power tool that was capable of great production who spent most of his time going from one individual to another in order to learn from each how to use his fine instrument or to talk about what the tool could do. Using it would give him the best idea of what it could accomplish, although he would probably seek initial instruction from an authorized source and might attend occasional conferences to perfect his operation and appreciate the tool's potentialities.
