Welcoming the Public

[Note: Extracts from letters to the Reading Room Division from branch church librarians]

London, England

Our Reading Room had been thoroughly repaired and restored after war damage when a visitor criticized its appearance. He asked why all Christian Science Reading Rooms were made to look the same, with wood paneling at the rear of the display windows, curtains above that, and a vase of flowers in the exact center. As a result of this comment the curtains were drawn back so that passers-by could look into the Reading Room. Almost at once strangers began to come in to inquire about Christian Science and to read. They continue to do so.

One visitor, when buying a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and a Christian Science Quarterly, told us that he had learned how to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Quarterly by reading the opened books in the window each day for some months.
