NOTHING INFERIOR TO SPIRIT

Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 477) reveals the comforting and healing spiritual fact that "Soul can never reflect anything inferior to Spirit." Then any sense of inferiority can only be a lying supposition, an illusion of material sense, since all that is real has its source in Soul, God. Inferiority is a phase of material sense induced by ignorance. The effect upon anyone so enmeshed may be repressing, depressing, and may find expression in a hopeless feeling of insecurity, of not being wanted, of not having a place in which to work, and in failure to hold any position that may be obtained.

The writer at one time was very much under the ban of a belief of inferiority complex, which had a decidedly hampering influence upon his life for several years. He seemed to himself to be surplus and unwanted, and therefore a failure, and satisfactory employment did not unfold. The many efforts on the part of his father to find him suitable employment did not come to fruition, and this condition lasted until some years after the passing on of his father. Then through the instrumentality of Christian Science the Saviour, which is Truth, was found. Through Science a clearer understanding of God's nature, character, qualities, and attributes was gained, and this had a very decided and a very beneficial effect upon the writer's mental outlook, giving hope and expectancy of a better and a happier life. But that alone was not sufficient to break up the illusion or result in complete freedom. Through the study of Christian Science it was seen in increasing measure that man is not the slave or victim of human beliefs, but is truly the son of God, dependent upon God for everything—for life, for health, strength, ability, employment, and success. These truths were partially glimpsed, but were not at that time realized.

Much help was gained through the contemplation of the words of the refrain of Hymn No. 137 in the Christian Science Hymnal:
