Church Dedications

Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.

Petoskey Evening News and Northern Michigan Review

Petoskey, Michigan (First Church)

First Church of Christ, Scientist, Petoskey, devoted a portion of the morning service recently to the dedication of the church edifice.

A brief history of the church was read. Interest in Christian Science in Petoskey dates back to 1885. First formal services were held in downtown halls. In 1906 Christian Science Society, Petoskey, was organized with twelve charter members. In 1908 the society became officially First Church of Christ, Scientist, Petoskey, a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1910 the lot on which the church stands was acquired, and construction of the building was started, and completed in 1911. All indebtedness was paid in 1914.

In 1951 extensive improvements were made, including the construction and outfitting of a Sunday School room and the transfer of the Reading Room from its former quarters to a downtown location on Park Avenue. Funds for these improvements were supplied by the local church building fund and by a generous grant from the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy.
