A REMEDY FOR UNREST

The remedy for unrest is to be found in the Christ. Jesus referred to this when he said (Matt. 11:29), "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls." True rest and relaxation are to be found through surrender to the government of God. In reality we are not mortals tossed upon a sea of troubles, moved by self-will, and struggling to maintain ourselves against overwhelming odds. We are immortals, living in the calm, clear serenity of Soul.

Our rest in Spirit is not a lethargy or oblivion. It comes to us as an inward, active conviction of God's goodness and love. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Rudimental Divine Science"' (p. 12), "Christian Science erases from the minds of invalids their mistaken belief that they live in or because of matter, or that a so-called material organism controls the health or existence of mankind, and induces rest in God, divine Love, as caring for all the conditions requisite for the wellbeing of man."

Divine Science comes to us as the Comforter, giving assurance in place of doubt, peace in place of anxiety, and calming the turbulence of mortal thought and all its unsatisfied desires. Man, who rests in heaven, spiritual harmony, can never be touched by hell, or evil. The sufferings of hell force mortals to give up their sinful beliefs and find man's true consciousness to be in the harmony of heaven. Fear, lust, hatred, and sin cannot disturb the peace of spiritual law and love, which is ever present. We need to realize this and so protect ourselves from error's ill effects. Fear has no mind through which to work, and no man through which it can be made manifest. Fear is the offspring of darkness and ignorance and disappears when touched by the peace and power of the Christ.
