THE PREVENTION OF DISEASE

Mary Baker Eddy has pointed out that the practice of Christian Science not only heals disease but also prevents it. And if Christian Scientists faithfully follow the instructions in our Leader's writings, they will enjoy an increasing measure of health and well-being in their daily living.

The Apostle Paul makes an interesting comment on the subject of the prevention of disease in one of his letters. He tells us that we should examine ourselves, and then eat and drink of the cup of the Lord. In other words, we are to examine our thoughts and seek purification of human consciousness through spiritual communion with the one infinite Mind, Spirit. He also cautions us specifically against failure to do this. He writes (I Cor. 11:30), "For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep."

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 411), "The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin." And these three conditions of thought may result not only in disease, but also in lack, failure, and other human discords. Therefore, to prevent disease and other forms of suffering we must know and practice the truth of Christian Science, which destroys these enemies of mankind —fear, ignorance, and sin.
