SPIRITUAL ILLUMINATION

In the Bible we read that God's first command was (Gen. 1:3), "Let there be light." Christian Science shows clearly that God's light comes to us through revelation and inspiration—through the unfolding of spiritual ideas. It is spiritual illumination, the light of Truth, the light of the Christ.

Both before and after the advent of Jesus those whose thought was prepared spiritually to receive Truth were spiritually illumined by the light of the Christ. It illumined the thought of Isaiah so that he foretold the coming of the Messiah. This prophet wrote (Isa. 9:2), "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."

It was Christlikeness and spirituality, based upon the understanding of the perfection of God and of man as His image, that enabled Jesus to heal sickness and sin and to overcome every problem presented to him, even death itself. The multitudes thronged him, bringing to him those that were in need of healing; and they were healed immediately. The Way-shower knew that what appeared to be a sick, sinful, or dying person was not the truth of man's being, but merely the false evidence of material sense, to be rejected and denied. His spiritually illumined consciousness—the Christ-consciousness—beheld man forever perfect, the image and likeness of God.
