It was a great experience to me...
It was a great experience to me when I read for the first time the truth of God and man in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I experienced a deep sense of peace and inspiration such as I had never known before. It was as if I were seeing everything anew, for the basis of my thought was changed from matter to Spirit. As Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 259), "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea, —perfect God and perfect man,— as the basis of thought and demonstration." Questions bothering me at the time just vanished, and I saw in a degree that man cannot be subjected to material beliefs. For many hours each day I read from Science and Health. Soon the necessity of applying what I had been learning became apparent, and the opportunities to do so followed.
One of these opportunities came while I was serving in the armed forces. One day I felt discomfort in my eyes; and looking in the mirror I noticed that they were quite inflamed. A fellow soldier said: "You had better see the doctor; you have pinkeye. The medics say that if they see more of it they are going to segregate those who have it."
When I heard these remarks I resolved to do better work in Christian Science, for at the air base where I was stationed I had noticed others with the same difficulty. Although I endeavored to lift my thought by declaring the truth for myself, the evidence still persisted. A few days later I telephoned the Christian Science Wartime Minister and asked him for help, which he assured me he would give. Then I read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. Afterward I affirmed the truth that man is spiritual and perfect and that therefore neither I nor anyone else could manifest imperfection. I felt the healing truth operating in my consciousness as I read, and fear was replaced with peace and dominion. When I got up the following morning my eyes looked and felt clearer, and the evidence of disease soon disappeared. I was conscious of harmony, and nothing further was said about anyone having pinkeye. This healing, which has been permanent, inspired me to progress in my understanding of God through the study of Christian Science.
