RADIO PROGRAM No. 56 - Serving Your Country Without Penalty

On this program Herbert E. Rieke of Indianapolis, Indiana, told of his own experience, as follows:

It was in North Africa, and I belonged to an Air Corps group whose job was to carry spies as well as supplies from a base in Algiers into the mountainous areas of southern France. Some of the crews had difficulty in locating the target, which was an arrangement of small fires and then a signal from a flashlight when the plane was low enough. I thought that I might be of help, so I asked permission of the commanding officer to accompany some of the missions.

On one occasion it was necessary to come down between mountain ranges so as to drop the material five hundred feet from the ground. The navigating and piloting had to be perfect in order to clear those mountains.
