COEXISTENCE AMONG MEN AND NATIONS

On reviewing a period of great stress including undeclared and cold wars, representatives of leading nations of the world are giving serious consideration to a new method of working out their relationships. The proposed plan is called coexistence. It calls for an attempt of the nations of the world, despite their conflicting political and economic ideas, to live peaceably side by side without engaging in war. The President of the United States has called this method a modus vivendi, or a way of living, for the people of the present-day world.

The student of Christian Science is aware of the dangers and uncertainties involved in attempting to fulfill any agreement based on the belief that creation is material. It is his duty to fortify himself immediately with the spiritual facts regarding any situation with which he is confronted in individual or world affairs. And what are the spiritual facts regarding the present proposal of coexistence among the nations of the world—of a modus vivendi, or a way of living together, as it has been called?

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 557) Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Divine Science rolls back the clouds of error with the light of Truth, and lifts the curtain on man as never born and as never dying, but as coexistent with his creator." Since God is divine Love and eternal Life—and this is what the Bible teaches—it must be evident that all of His ideas live eternally in a state of harmonious, perfect coexistence with Him and with each other. This fact alone, accepted by Christian Scientists and maintained by them, will do much to help establish a constructive sense of coexistence in human experience between men and nations of today.
