GOD ABUNDANT IN GOODNESS
"Thou , Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee," the Psalmist declared (Ps. 86:5). One of the most important truths which the Scriptures present is that God is good. And because God is omnipresent, no one can escape His love. No matter what disturbing conditions seem to present themselves to us, the way to overcome them is through our understanding of God's ever-present goodness, which is tender, merciful, intelligent, immortal, and impartial. God's goodness expresses His infinite nature. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy says ( p. 119). "God is natural good, and is represented only by the idea of goodness; while evil should be regarded as unnatural, because it is opposed to the nature of Spirit, God."
Man is the image, or spiritual idea, of God, divine Mind, who knows no evil and manifests none. God is also the loving Father-Mother, who governs His child and completely shields him from all harm. God preserves man's existence intact, without blemish, in freedom, health, and harmony. In his true being each one is a child of God, good.
Christian Science teaches us that God can never be separated from His reflection, man. In the measure that we grasp the significance of this true sonship we are able to destroy the lies and fears of mortal existence, which suggest that we are ill, subject to contagion, to unkindness, and are living in a material world filled with problems and difficulties. These erroneous suggestions and fears come from the mistaken concept that man is material and mortal, with a selfhood separated from God, the all-embracing good.
