THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE TEXTBOOK

The manuscript of the first edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" was completed by Mary Baker Eddy in a quiet upper room with one small skylight and no other window. The mighty truth in this book was to reveal the Science of the Scriptures and reinstate primitive Christian healing. Together with the Bible it was later ordained pastor of every Christian Science church in the world.

In Mrs. Eddy's Message to The Mother Church for 1900 we read (pp. 6, 7): "Some modern exegesis on the prophetic Scriptures cites 1875 as the year of the second coming of Christ. In that year the Christian Science textbook, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' was first published."

Assured of the divine origin and power of the Word as inscribed in its pages, Mrs. Eddy with superb courage launched her book and its inspired teaching into a center of intellectualism and culture, for during that era literature, psychology, science, and art flourished in Boston. Philosophers and teachers like Emerson and Alcott were setting forth and experimenting with their theories and philosophies; divines like Phillips Brooks and Edward Everett Hale were drawing throngs to their churches.
