BETTER HEALING
"How can I do better healing work?" is the question that confronts every Christian Scientist. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 232): "Metaphysical healing, or Christian Science, is a demand of the times. Every man and every woman would desire and demand it, if he and she knew its infinite value and firm basis." Then she goes on to state one of the most vital answers to the question of how to do better healing: "The unerring and fixed Principle of all healing is God; and this Principle should be sought from the love of good, from the most spiritual and unselfish motives. Then will it be understood to be of God, and not of man."
To acknowledge God as the loving Father, the creative Principle of all that is real, with full faith in His ability to manifest the good needed to eradicate any sense of evil and suffering, is always basic to success in healing. The writer of the epistle to the Hebrews put it in these words (11:6): "Without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." When one's motive in healing is primarily to prove the presence and allness of good and is not a merely selfish effort to make matter comfortable or satisfactory, consciousness is uplifted to the spiritual state, where God's government is proved to be supreme. God is the healer, because power belongs to Him.
To prove oneself the expression or embodiment of that power one needs to develop his sense of good. This is a simple process, but it is essential to spiritual growth. It means loving good and living it, never letting self-interest rule one's motives or deeds, but demanding of oneself justice and good will for all. Mrs. Eddy says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 160): "The heart that beats mostly for self is seldom alight with love. To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science."
