Signs of the Times

The Reverend George T. H. Reid, M.C.,
B.D., in an article in The Expository Times
Aberdeen, Scotland

It is a natural tendency for us to see in great men the virtues we ourselves most admire. I heard of a Japanese commander who, given a New Testament, handed it back after he read it with the remark, "Your Jesus was the bravest man I have read of." ...

It is the effect of the richness of his [Christ Jesus'] nature that different men see such different qualities to admire in him. The young may find in him their leader, the old their refuge and their strength; the soldier may see in him the supreme commander, the man of peace the good shepherd for his life. The social reformer may find in him the greatest of all revolutionaries; the worker, the carpenter of Nazareth, who by his toil has hallowed all common work.
