It is with much gratitude for the helpful and inspiring testimonies I have read in the Christian Science periodicals that I should like to add my testimony in the hope that it will bless others. It was during World War II, when much fear was expressed at the possibility of an enemy invasion of England, that I turned to Christian Science. My own fear was so great that I found it difficult to concentrate even on household duties.
One day a friend, although not a Christian Scientist herself, advised me to call on a neighbor who was a Christian Scientist and who she thought could help me. I shall always be most grateful that I was led to seek the acquaintance of this neighbor. During my conversation with her I glimpsed for the first time that God is not responsible for human discord and that He is "of purer eyes than to behold evil" (Hab. 1:13). This being the case, I realized, He could not know of the warlike conditions of which I felt so conscious. I went home entirely free from the bondage of my self-made fears. More wonderful still was the fact that I had found a God of love; in place of my old theological concept of God as both good and evil was the concept of a God who is good alone.
Later, in a rather heavy air raid, the enemy planes were flying low, unloading a large number of incendiary bombs on the houses in our road. A great fear took hold of me, and I felt rooted to the spot where I was standing. I called to my husband to fetch "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When he handed it to me I opened it to the words (p. 55), "Truth's immortal idea is sweeping down the centuries, gathering beneath its wings the sick and sinning." Although I had read these words many times before, they now took on a new meaning. I saw that nothing is sweeping down on humanity but the wings of divine Love, the comforting consciousness of God's presence; and this realization completely blotted out my fear of winged aircraft.
