GOD'S NATURE AND CHARACTER EXPRESSED IN MAN

In her sermon entitled "The People's Idea of God" Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (p. 7): "Scientific discovery and the inspiration of Truth have taught me that the health and character of man become more or less perfect as his mind-models are more or less spiritual. Because God is Spirit, our thoughts must spiritualize to approach Him, and our methods grow more spiritual to accord with our thoughts." In other words, it is to spiritualization of thought and character that we must look if we are to have true health and happiness.

David said (Ps. 17:15), "I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness." Logically, then, in order to awake in that likeness and be satisfied, one must first of all learn and approximate the nature and character of God. The character of God, Mind, cannot be circumscribed in any personal or bodily sense, and the logic of Christian Science recognizes the impossibility of a bodily or corporeal God.

On the contrary, Science declares that the nature of infinite Mind is clearly incorporeal, as indicated in the Scriptural declaration (Jer. 23:24), "Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord." This one infinite, all-inclusive presence is the eternal I AM, or infinity of being, and so the declaration to Israel still stands (Ex. 20:3), "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Thou shalt have no other power before Me, the one infinite All-power. Thou shalt have no other mind before Me, the one infinite, all-inclusive Mind. Thou shalt have no life before Me, the one infinite and eternal Life.
