During my girlhood I joined an orthodox Protestant church but occasionally attended the Wednesday evening testimony meetings of a nearby Church of Christ, Scientist. I was mildly interested in the testimonies of healing and enjoyed the meetings as a casual visitor. When a serious physical problem arose in the form of painful inflammation of my eyes and a pronounced case of astigmatism I was terrified and in my extremity turned to Christian Science. I had a dear friend who was an experienced practitioner, and I sought her help.

This loving friend uncovered the reason for my eye trouble. Like many young people, I had been attracted to and associated with a sophisticated group whose worldly influence was harmful. The practitioner pointed out that this influence was warping my mental outlook and that my erroneous thinking was being evidenced as a discordant physical condition. When I realized this my healing was practically instantaneous.

For a while I continued to study Christian Science, but later I wandered from its teachings. Finally a painful experience occurred while I was motoring to California. A high fever, resulting from infection of a toe and from a throat condition, diagnosed as a paritonsillar abscess, made further travel by car impossible. My foot was so swollen that I could not wear a shoe, and I could neither speak above a whisper nor swallow solid food. I left the friends with whom I had been traveling, and after a brief stay in a hotel I continued to my destination by train.
