When Christian Science was presented to me I had just made the decision that I would never take another drop of medicine as long as I lived. The reason for this decision was not that I had heard of Christian Science but that I had become thoroughly disgusted with material remedies.

Soon after I had made this decision a friend called to see me. She was a Christian Scientist but heretofore had said very little about her religion. When she came in and noticed how despondent I was she asked the reason; so I told her of my ill-health. She said, "You do not have to be in that condition." I jokingly replied: "Is that Christian Science? Well, maybe I'll take you up on that." But I did not intend to do so.

At that time I professed no religion; in fact I had never been a member of any church. However, I did believe there was a God and that He could do all things. But having no intelligent concept of God, I could reason no further about Him. I thought very much about what my friend had said and called to see her the next evening. She gave me two Sentinels, which I read and enjoyed; she also invited me to accompany her to a Wednesday testimony meeting.
