At this time, with the world in its present state of confusion and distress, I feel especially conscious of my gratitude for the teachings of Christian Science. With the understanding that Christian Science gives of God as the perfect Principle, Love, and of man as the reflection, or effect, of this perfect Principle, one can learn to build with certainty upon the reality of spiritual good, in spite of all arguments to the contrary.
Christian Science was recommended to me by a friend when I was in a state of disillusionment and despair. It seemed to me that there was no solution to the problem of individual or collective existence. I believed solely in the power of material knowledge, but I found no satisfaction in acquiring it. It also became apparent to me that materialistic philosophies invariably fail in their practical application. When first reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I turned its pages with some skepticism because I had never found any interest in the Bible or recognized the value of the message of Christianity. However, I had not read very far before I was convinced that Science and Health contained the truth, and as I eagerly continued reading I was amazed to find that it gave the answers to so many of the questions in my mind, as well as satisfied the yearnings of my heart.
As I read I experienced my first physical healing through Christian Science, for I saw that if the truth revealed in Christian Science heals, I could prove it there and then by discarding my glasses. I took them off and have not used them since, though I had worn them from childhood because of eye weakness, and I was becoming more and more dependent on them. I was grateful for the healing, but the really important thing to me was that I had found God, a God who is the intelligent, provable Principle, Life, and I felt the love of His presence with me, making all things new.
