Rights Of Christian Scientists Increasingly Respected

Wisconsin

The biennial meeting of the Wisconsin legislature convened this year. Every bill was carefully scrutinized and analyzed by this office to see if it contained anything that would affect Christian Science either directly or indirectly. We found several bills that needed watching because they contained paragraphs from the statutes which specifically mention Christian Science.

Bill 381S was of considerable interest to us. It is known as a "Nursing Homes Licensing and Accrediting Act." It proposed to set up minimum standards for these homes to maintain, such as the number of patients that could be cared for, the necessary sanitation facilities, and perhaps the amount of equipment and miscellaneous items required for minimum standards. The supervision and enforcement were to be vested in the State Board of Health. We felt it would not be proper for a Christian Science Nursing Home, approved by the Nursing Homes Committee appointed by The Christian Science Board of Directors, wherein healing is achieved by prayer or spiritual means, to be subjected to supervision and regulation by individuals trained in materia medica. Physics could not properly supervise or regulate metaphysics.
