THE INSTANTANEOUS HEALING POWER OF SCIENTIFIC PRAYER

The Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6: 9–13) and "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 468) contain healing words as powerful as have ever been uttered or written; and this claim is verified by the many healings which they have accomplished when they have been spiritually understood and applied.

The Lord's Prayer in the light of its spiritual interpretation, as given in Science and Health (pp. 16, 17), tells us that we have an adorable Father-Mother God, who dwells in ever-present harmony; that His kingdom is here, and that His harmonious government reigns supreme. His will must then be wholly good, because the all-harmonious perfection of His being could know no evil. This beautiful prayer fills us with the assurance that the substance of His spiritual grace is already ours; that this grace enables us to love and forgive each other through the reflection of His goodness and so saves us from the temptation of believing in the reality of sin, disease, and death. It shows us that all power, glory, and honor belongs to Him forever. When we grasp these truths we see that the infinitude of Life, the all-powerful constancy of Truth, and the fatherhood and motherhood of Love are with us to protect and release us from the ills and sins of the flesh.

God's ever-present love and protection were experienced by a mother who, upon being told by an attending physician that her six-months-old daughter would die before morning, dropped to her knees and began to repeat the Lord's Prayer. When she came to the words, "Thy will be done," she paused. For a moment she was not sure what God's will might be or that she wanted it to be done. As she pondered this, the thought came to her that since God is the creator of all and is all-loving—and she had experienced His loving-kindness many times in answered prayer— He would not first give her the child and then take it away. In that moment she knew it was God's will for the child to live. With humble expectancy she repeated the words, "Thy will be done." By morning the child was well on the road to complete recovery.
