"CHRIST'S KEYNOTE"

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 410), "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!'" Such a clear and definite statement deserves careful consideration.

In music the keynote is the popular name for the fundamental tone of the scale. Its technical name is the tonic, and means the tone. One definition of "tonic" is "the chief tone with which the scale begins, and to which each one of the other tones bears a definite relationship." How truly dependent on the keynote, then, is the harmony of a composition.

The analogy between music and Christian Science has long been noted. Mrs. Eddy often uses musical terms to express some important scientific fact. For instance, she compares harmony in man to harmony in music. It is logical therefore to assume that if we would demonstrate harmony in our daily lives we must give heed to its keynote.
