SENSES OF SOUL

The writer of Proverbs declares (20:12), "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them." This statement from the Scriptures clearly indicates the source of sight and hearing to be spiritual. Christian Scientists, reasoning as they are taught to do from cause to effect, conclude that since God, Spirit, is cause, the effect, which must be like the cause, is spiritual. Christian Science confirms this Scriptural statement as to the spiritual nature of sight and hearing.

The question which concerns us is, Can this be proved and manifested in normal sight and hearing? Can I recover what seems to be lost? Can a defective organ become perfect? As long as we regard matter, or mortal mind, as the creator and controller of man, we do not perceive the real cause and creator of our existence; and to remedy this we must reject the material theories of sight and hearing and find these functions in the discernment and understanding of God.

Even the material theory of sight contradicts the evidence of the senses. Suppose you are reading a book and close your eyes as you read it? You cannot see the book; but why? Perhaps you will answer, "Because my sight is shut out by my closed eyelids and therefore cannot get to the book." Actually this is not so. The reason is that when you close your eyes you do not see the book because light from the book cannot reach your eyes. You do not see any object unless light from that object reaches you.
