Shortly before Christmas I was...

Shortly before Christmas I was alone in my store and was preparing to close at six o'clock. A young man came in and, while I was getting the merchandise he had requested, disappeared, taking with him a large leather case in which were my entire day's receipts, bankbook, a check, and glasses.

I had a practitioner staying with me in my apartment, which is above my business premises. I went upstairs and told her what had happened. She said that that was a lie about God's child, for man cannot be robbed of anything real or good. We sat down to dinner, and she continued to talk about man's honesty and said, "That young man needs all the love we can give him." During the entire dinner hour we dwelt on spiritual things, and I was greatly uplifted. She asked me if I had any thought of reporting the incident to the police department, and I replied that I had not, for I wanted to handle the situation through spiritual means alone. She said: "Good; the only way is through Love. Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 225), 'Love is the liberator.'"

That evening we attended a Christian Science lecture in a nearby town, and during the lecture the speaker said in substance: "Do you think you have been robbed of something? Love is the only answer." It seemed that this statement was meant just for me. For several days my thought dwelt on Love, and I can honestly say the incident was forgotten in my endeavor to love my fellow man. A few days before Christmas the leather case and the entire contents were returned to me. I believe nothing had been touched.
