Signs of the Times

Rev. Marshall Ketchum in a sermon in The Fallbrook Enterprise Fallbrook, California

One of the questions a Christian must ask himself is, "How can I be true to my Christian calling even though much of the society around me is non-Christian?"... Jesus said, "Ye are the light of the world." Men do not "light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick." That means that Christians have the obligation, not to just go and hide somewhere, but to be a light that shines into this unchristian world and make it a more decent place in which to live. This means that we are not to just renounce the world and condemn it.... Our orders are to go "into all the world, and preach the gospel." "But," you say, "that might mean that I would get into trouble and be criticized." Yes, you may get into trouble if you are Christian enough. Jesus got into trouble. He got a cross. But whatever happens to us, our orders remain the same.

If Christians are to be God's instruments in bringing about a better world, they must first be sure that their own personal moral lives are of a high caliber. "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour—?" We are to say to the world, "Come be Christians —we are Christians."
