A Firm Foundation

[Note: Extracts from letters and reports to the Reading Room Division from branch church librarians]

When the privilege of serving as librarian in a Christian Science Reading Room came to me, I turned to Mind for guidance. "It would be wonderful," I thought, "to know in greater detail the books written by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy." I realized that it would also be helpful to be more familiar with each of the books written about Mrs. Eddy.

At the first staff meeting we talked about the value of special work which would better inform us as to the contents of the books in our Reading Room. We saw that if we did this work we could tell inquirers about helpful items of particular interest to them. We saw too that as our own appreciation of the books developed through our deeper knowledge of their meaning it could only promote interest in the Reading Room.

It was decided to have a book review period in each staff meeting. A list was made of all the books in the Reading Room. A second list was made of all the attendants. Both lists were carefully checked, and the latter was arranged in alphabetical order. Each attendant was given a title to work with and present in a comprehensive book review at the next staff Workshop. At that time each would cover not only the contents of the book and its significance for her, but the bindings in which it was available, the prices at which it was sold in the Reading Room, and so forth.
