SOME ASPECTS OF LIFE, TRUTH, AND LOVE
Life is God, good. All true law is included in God, divine Life, Truth, and Love. Divine Life is naturally creative and spiritually continuous, There are no material laws to deny the continuity of Life, for no such laws exist. Spiritual law ensures perfection of origin and perpetual well-being. God, expressed through His spiritual laws, demands that every experience be in harmony with Himself, the Maker of all. Every real experience is a harmonious experience. Whatever is erroneous is extraneous to Truth, and since the man of God exists in Truth, such experiences do not form any part of man's experience.
These facts are found in the understanding of divine Principle, Love, and this is where we find man. When we learn in Christian Science to accept the Bible declaration as practical (I John 3:2), "Beloved, now are we the sons of God," we find that joyous, healthy, sinless being is our only being. When error assails or suggests that we are not the sons and daughters of God, do we listen to the voice of error or to the voice of Truth? Should we not flee for refuge to "the secret place of the most High" and remain there. This secret place is man's dwelling place. He is not a visitor, but a resident in God's kingdom.
How can we find our true selfhood? Through prayer. Through daily communion with the Christ, the Rock, the strong tower and the firm foundation of life. We cannot in truth be moved from the basis of spiritual being.
The so-called material body does not control us; neither are we the victims of a so-called material mind. Spirit gives us life, health, movement, and continuity. True being is like Christ, "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever," always filled with grace and truth. There is no foothold in falsity, no security in false laws. Once we have learned of the presence and power of God we are aware of our absolute security in His love. He is divine Love, and Mary Baker Eddy states with spiritual conviction (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." Our need is already met because God, divine Truth, forever has been, is now, and forever will be the only presence, power, and knowledge.
Love enlightens consciousness, and we can feel its spiritual influence washing away the debris of so-called accumulated mortal thought. Divine Love is the great cleanser and purifier. In its cleansing and regenerating mission it renews and restores strength, health, and ability, thus bringing to light the man of God's creating, forever pure, holy, and strong. When the purity of Love is comprehended even in the least degree, it annuls poisons of all description.
Principle, or God, keeps all in perfect equilibrium, perfectly balanced, perfectly adjusted, and therefore entirely serene. Principle is expressed in poise and precision, in integrity and spiritual strength. Any vacillating belief or uncertainty of decision disappears when divine Principle is understood. We need not strive to come to a correct decision on any particular issue through mere opinion or belief. Principle brings reason into the field of action and thus keeps any decision we make in line with the course that Principle directs. How often has the Christian Scientist proved this when, content to stop human planning, he has been willing to wait patiently on God. In so doing he did not employ a blind faith or idle waiting. He looked to Principle and in some degree found himself to be the reflection of Principle and therefore capable of action in accord with Principle's demands.
The purpose of Christian Science is not alone to restore health to a sick body, but to regenerate a sick mind and save mankind through the understanding of the spiritual nature of God and man. Christ Jesus was always conscious of the perfect man. That is why he healed the sick so quickly and naturally. His view of life was a heavenly view. He lived in the heavenly consciousness which he named the kingdom of God. Our Leader discovered this kingdom and blazed the trail to it. She sacrificed much that was material to do so, but she loved humanity sufficiently to put human will aside; and thus we are all blessed by her labors.
We have, however, a responsibility to God, to Mrs. Eddy, and to mankind. We too must be willing to come out of the material ways of thinking and give our time and energies to the Cause of Christ. If reluctant at first to do this, let us strive to love more, for love is the incentive to action. No obstacle can stand before one who is moved with compassion. Barriers are swept away by flood tides of Love. There is no obstacle too great for Love. It is our realization of the essence and strength of divine Love which is the great need.
The power of Truth is present. Our faith must be held firm until it blossoms into understanding and we know the great facts of being as given in "the scientific statement of being," to be found in Science and Health (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."
