Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...

Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes on page 402 of Science and Health, "Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged."

It is my privilege to bear witness to the skill of mental surgery through Christian Science in the setting and healing of a broken jaw. One morning, in 1939, while waiting for a streetcar I stepped back onto the porch of a house for shelter from the rain. I fainted, and a few moments later I found myself lying on the walk. I was dazed, but got to my feet immediately; I realized, however, that I needed help. Christian Science had been brought to my attention a little over a year before, and I had studied it, but not very consistently. The seed, however, had been sown, and my only desire was to have Christian Science treatment.

Conscious that my face was bleeding and believing that the jawbone was broken, but supported by my slight knowledge of the truth, I made my way home. I telephoned immediately to a Christian Science practitioner for help. I called again half an hour later, and while we were talking I distinctly felt my face resume its normal shape and knew that the jawbone had gone back to its proper place.
