Although Christian Science was read and practiced in my family when I was a young man and I attended church services occasionally, I had no desire to take God into my heart. Then one day I felt the urgent need of help in overcoming a serious disease which made me feel hopeless. I had visited a doctor, only to find that he could not help me.

Although I was not confined to bed and never lost a day from work, I was in a most unhappy state of mind. Finally I called upon a Christian Science practitioner. He eased my mind so quickly that my fear of the complaint was abolished right there. He gave me references to read from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Now I know that "man's extremity is God's opportunity" and that "the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword" (Hebr. 4: 12).

One night, beginning with the chapter on Prayer, I read Science and Health continually for hours. It was most unusual for me to be able to read so long without my exes getting tired. As I was ascending the stairs to retire a strange feeling came over me. I felt as though I were walking on air. Some time later I realized that I had been "absent from the body" and "present with the Lord" at that time. I had been praying daily for God to cleanse my thoughts, and now I knew that my prayers had been answered. Through Christian Science healing we know the nearness of God.
