LETTERS TO THE PRESS FROM CHRISTIAN SCIENCE COMMITTEES ON PUBLICATION

Lisburn Herald

Lisburn Herald Lisburn, County Antrim Northern Ireland

I read in your esteemed journal that a parent was fined [recently] at Crumlin Petty Sessions Court for noncompliance with the Vaccination (Ireland) Acts, 1863-1879.

Contrary, however, to an inference which might be drawn from the wording of your report, I learn that the objection was not presented upon religious conscience as a Christian Scientist. The reason I write is that it should be well known that membership in the Church of Christ, Scientist, implies obedience to the laws of the land. In the matter of vaccination of infants, Christian Scientists in Ulster are very glad that the people of England abandoned compulsory vaccination in 1948 with the passing of their new Health Act. One hopes that the people of Northern Ireland will soon adopt, through their own Parliament, the same progressive and liberal attitude towards this question as now prevails throughout the rest of the United Kingdom.
