Newark, New York (First Church).

The auditorium of First Church of Christ, Scientist, was twice filled for its dedicatory services last Sunday. ... A brief history on the group of the Christian Science group in Newark was presented by the First Reader. ...

As early as 1884, Newark was touched by its first glimpse of this truth. A practitioner from the Middle West, on her way home from class instruction with Mary Baker Eddy, stopped in Mewark and brought the healing truth to at least two persons who were later to become charter members in the Christian Science Society, Newark. In 1905 a teacher in the Newark High School added another group to those interested. Meanwhile, at the home of our present charter member ... a deep interest was also growing. Eventually these various groups joined and began to meet together on Sunday afternoons.

On May 31, 1906, a business meeting was held for the purpose of organization. A constitution was adopted and officers elected. ... In November of this same year, the newly formed society signed a lease for a room in which to hold services. In January, 1919, ... arrangements were made for holding services in the Universalist Church. ...

In June, 1922, a house on the corner of Mason and High Streets was purchased. Completion of payments for this property was made in 1940. ...

In 1948 the need for church building expressed itself in a series of church building meetings. At a special meeting in October of that year, the society took its first step towards becoming a branch ... of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. The certificate of incorporation was filed March 15, 1950.

From this time, developments came rapidly. On June 5, 1950, the building committee was authorized to obtain plans and estimates for a new church edifice. ... The work of construction began on October 1; and although the building was still incomplete, services were held in the new structure five months later—in February, 1951. ...

Provisions for aid in church building through the Selina C. Cornish Fund, administered by the Chase National Bank, and through the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy made possible the final payment in full of all outstanding obligations, and hence this day of dedication.
