"THOSE DAYS SHALL BE SHORTENED"

In the twenty-fourth chapter of Matthew we find a striking record of a thought-provoking issue as it was presented by Jesus. He had been speaking to his disciples of the approaching destruction of the temple, and they had asked him, very naturally, "Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of tin coming, and of the end of the world?"

In reply, the Master made clear that there would be upheavals in material sense as divine Truth brought evil to the surface and destroyed it. He assured his disciples, however, that "he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved." He said, "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations" and made clear that "then shall the end come."

Superficially viewed, it would appear strange that the process whereby the eternal harmony of being is manifested should seem to be attended by such disturbances. Christian Science makes plain, however, that the activity of Truth uncovers evil, which has seemed to be deep-seated in mortal consciousness, and causes it to come to the surface to pass away. When the unreal nature of evil is thus seen, these disturbances will not affright us. We shall be able to obey the Master's injunction (Luke 21:19), "In our patience possess ye your souls."
