I did not take up the study of...

I did not take up the study of Christian Science for a physical healing. The very first Sentinel I read appealed to me and led me to seek a fuller understanding of God. When I studied Mrs. Eddy's definition of God on page 465 of Science and Health, I was satisfied that He is Mind and that man. His idea, reflects this Mind. However, there came a time when I had to prove these truths. One day I received a letter from the education department to say that my services as a teacher would no longer be required until I had obtained my certificate. This meant that I would have to pass an examination I had neglected to take many years before.

This was a dreadful shock, as I suddenly realized that besides being out of work, I had no money, and two children were entirely dependent on me. I was fearful of the examination, and the thought came that I was too old to study and did not have the intelligence to pass the examination. In my anxiety I opened Science and Health, and the first sentence I read was (p. 215), "Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life." This statement of truth was very assuring and comforted me.

The annual examination had just been given, and I did not see how I could wait a whole year. The practitioner pointed out that there is no time in God's unfolding, and that all good is available now. I relied radically on Mind for courage, intelligence, and supply, and was well provided for in all ways. The university authorities allowed me to take the supplementary examination two months later, and in another two months I was fully certificated and back teaching.
